   EDUCATION/TRAINING ASSISTANCE FOR VETERANS

EDUCATION:  The VA administers basic programs for veterans and service persons seeking assistance for education or training.

Those entering active service from 7/1/85 through the present, may receive benefits under the "Montgomery GI Bill", which has the service person place $100 per month for 12 months into an educational account. This program is available to active duty and selected reservists.

The benefits (usually 48 months of educational time, within a 10 year period, from separation) and amounts available under each of these programs varies and the Medina County Veterans Service Office or the VA (1-800-827-1000) can answer any questions that you might have about the monthly rates and duration of your benefits.

VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION:  Veterans who served in the military on or after 9/16/40, are eligible for vocational rehabilitation if all three of the following conditions are met:

  1. They suffered a service connected disability, which is compensatory,
  2. They were discharged under other than dishonorable conditions or are hospitalized awaiting separation for disability; and
  3. The VA determines that they need vocational rehabilitation to overcome an impairment to their ability to prepare for, obtain or retain employment. Their service connected disability must materially contribute to this employment handicap.

Generally, a rehab program must be completed within 12 years from the date that the veteran is notified of his or her eligibility for compensation.
